Geography Taster Day – Ambleside Campus – Monday 23rd June
We are delighted to invite you and your Year 12 A Level Geography or Environmental Science students to our Geography Taster Day this June at our Ambleside Campus. Delivered by experienced academic staff from the Institute of Science and Environment alongside our Outreach Team, this event offers a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with topical issues in Geography, explore our undergraduate programme, and gain valuable insights to support their applications to Higher Education.
Overview of the Day
- Introductory Talk: Studying Geography in Ambleside
- Hazards in the Himalayas: This session explores environmental hazards and global challenges, drawing on our research and public engagement in the Indian Himalaya to examine the impacts and responses to mountain flooding.
- How many ways are there to measure a tree: Nature-based landscape restoration are seen as key to decarbonisation and tackling climate change. But how do we estimate a tree’s carbon storage? Should a tree’s value be reduced to just the carbon or water is stores? This session explores how Geographers span the sciences, social sciences, and arts to value our landscapes and ecosystems in different ways.
